Abstract:

The aim of this study was to systematize the knowledge produced about tuberculosis in Brazilian prisons. An integrative review was achieved in MEDLINE, LILACS and electronic library SciELO, with keywords:“Tuberculosis”, “Prisons” e “Brazil”. Of the 61 records found, 33 were evaluated (28 duplicate records) and 21 included in the review (12 excluded second criterion). These studies effectively contribute to improve the knowledge about the magnitude of the disease among inmates, as well as to the choice of screening methods and diagnostic most appropriate to the prison setting. These studies have shown the incidence rates and prevalence of active and latent tuberculosis, as well as data on the profile of drug susceptibility and genotype of clinical isolates. Knowledge of data presented reinforces the need to adopt measures aimed at detection, treatment and follow-up cases. It is suggested that the new challenges for scientific research, are linked to the development of specific knowledge about the management of problem in an environment overflowing of peculiarities such as the prison.
