Abstract:

The aim of this study was to evaluate the consumption of ultra-processed - UP foods and associated factors among adults. We used cross-sectional data on 947 adultsthe Campinas Health Survey - ISACamp 2008-2009. Food consumption data were collected through 24-h food records, and we classified food items according to NOVA - a food classification based on the nature, extent and purpose of industrial processes. Linear regression models were fitted to evaluate the association of the consumption UP foods with predictor variables, with 5% significance. The average daily energy consumption was 2000.6 kcal per capita, and UP foods represented 24.1% of that. Ultra-processed food consumption was higher among women, and increases as schooling improves, also was higher among young adults, between 20 and 29 years old, as well as among ex-smokers and physically active at leisure. Results show that there is still time to step in favor to the health of the adult population. In this sense, research that deals with consumptionNOVA perspective, health repercussions and nutrition actions and policies should be a priority in current context of Brazil.
