Abstract:

Objective: Identify the association between nutritional status and functional dependence of the institutionalized elderly in Uberlândia -MG. Metholology: Cross-sectional study with 233. We assessed sociodemographic variables, nutritional status and degree of dependency of the elderly. Multivariate analysis was performed using Poisson regression with robust variance to assess the association between nutritional status and functional dependence of these seniors. Results: Low weight by Body Mass Index was associated to functional dependence after controlling for socioeconomic and demographic variables, senior with low weight, they had a prevalence ratio of dependence of 1.20 times the prevalence rate of dependence in well nourished elderly. As reported in the literature the age was also associated to dependence, with a prevalence ratio of 1.19 for the oldest ones. Conclusion: Underweight is an important associated factor to functional disability. Thus, it emphasizes the need for evaluation, monitoring and recovery of nutritional status in institutionalized elderly, which in addition to reducing morbidity and mortality from several diseases and improve quality of life, will play important role to prevention and to delay functional dependency.
