Abstract:

Historical social representations about stigma and prejudice related to unhoused people cause psychological distress, feeling of shame, withdrawalfamily and social relationships. This article aimed to understand how unhoused people and health professionals perceive, reproduce, elaborate and deal with the representations produced by their social conditions. Qualitative research, involving Participant Observation; Interviews with 24 unhoused people and Focal Group with professionalsthe services that provide care to the unhoused people. The study was carried out in the city of Rio de Janeiro in a place the use of crack has an important prevalence. Analysis was performed using the phenomenological narrative method. The stereotype provokes a self-image of an unworthy, unwanted person, which justifies daily discrimination and, above all, the loss of the most important condition of all beings: their human condition, in addition to legitimizing lack of assistance and violence against them. Deepening the relationship between prejudice and discrimination in the context of vulnerable populations and health services, can help unique therapeutic projects that promote the reduction of psychological suffering, better assistance and social recognition of citizenship of the unhoused people.
