Abstract:

This article presents an overview of the nature, functions and trajectory of health surveillance in the conformation of the SUS. Bibliographical sources and official documents were used, enriched with referencesthe trajectory of the authors, who have worked in health surveillance. Worrying facts in the mid-1990 gave political visibility to the fragility of the brazilian health surveillance, reflected in serious problems for the SUS. The creation of Anvisa and the SNVS and the support for State and municipal organs provided improvement in the structure and functioning of the health surveillance and its constitution like an emerging theme in research and education in public health. Several problems hamper the effective structuring of SNVS. The change in the design of health promotion is postulated, with the social responsibility of large corporations with activities having strong connections with risk factors related to the current epidemic of chronic diseases and a set of challenges to the best structuring of health surveillance in the SUS.
