Abstract:

The purpose of this article was to describe the urban work patterns among youths aged 14-15 years from Southern Brazil. Infant work was characterized as any activity that resulted in payment in form of assets, service or money. The analyses were stratified by sex and economic level. Out of the 4325 adolescents interviewed, the prevalence of work in the last year was 22.2%, being 27.7% for the male sex, and 17.0% for females. This proportion was also higher among poorest (30.0%) than the richest (14.3%). The majority of the adolescents worked out of home, about a half of them began to work before 14 years of age, and approximately 80% reported to work by own interest. Only 1% had contract of work, 30% worked more than six hours per day, and the mean income was lesser than US$ 75/month. Domestic services predominated among the poorest teenagers. There is a need of greater surveillance of infant work and of interventions seeking the attainment of the current legislation.
