Abstract:

The aim of this study was to analyze the use and access to medicines for type 2 diabetes mellitus in the elderly of the Family Health Strategy in Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo. This is a population-based household survey conducted with 338 elderly people sampled by conglomerates. Diabetes pharmacotherapy and access were investigated through a structured questionnaire in face-to-face interviews. The number of medications used to treat diabetes ranged1 to 4. There was a predominance of oral antidiabetics, with the use of only self-reported metformin by 37.9% of the elderly and 9.8% using sulphonylurea alone. In the group of elderly people aged 80 or over, a higher frequency (38.9%) of insulin use was noticed than in other age groups. Total access was estimated at 96.4%, the form of free financing at 78.1%, and pharmacies in the Sistema Único de Saúde were the main places of supply of medicines (74.8%). The metformin was the oral antidiabetic drug most used by the elderly in accordance with current recommendations for the treatment of the disease. However, inadequacies were observed, specifically in the isolated use of sulfonylurea. In addition, the importance of the public health system for the supply of medicines was highlighted.
