Abstract:

One factor that contributes to the emergence of multidrug-resistant microorganisms is the inappropriate use of antimicrobials. In this study we visited 192 homes to a questionnaire about the consumption habits of antimicrobials for all residents. The data revealed that 6.8% of participants used antimicrobial agents in recent months. Users were predominantly female (65.9%), aged between 20 and 59 years (50%) and income from 1 to 3 minimum salary (59.1%). Of the total, 9.1% made use of antimicrobials without prescription and 4.6% did not finish the treatment, citing improvement in symptoms (2.3%) or due to side effects (2.3%). The most reported reason for treatment was oropharyngeal infection (29.5). It was also found the use of antibiotics unnecessarily, as for the treatment of fever (2.3%), influenza (2.3%) and allergy (2.3%). Among respondents, 20.5% have a habit of indicating antimicrobials for family and friends. This study was conducted before the legal prohibition of the sale of antibiotics without a prescription. Most respondents are unaware of the risks of misuse and there was a considerable percentage of individuals who show these drugs to others. With the implementation of the law prohibiting the sale without a prescription is expected that this problem is minimized.
