Abstract:

On under development countries each child presented an average of three episodes of diarrhea per year on the twentieth century. In Brazil, a decrease of the number of deaths by diarrhea has been more closely related to the use of controlling techniques than to changes on life conditions. Objectives: To analyze the spacial distribution of morbidity by diarrhea in children and its relation with life conditions Methods: Ecological study, having the neighborhoods of the city of Itaborai as analysis units. The study‘s population was the number of hospitalizations of children < 5 years caused by diarrhea between the years of 2006 and 2009, available on the SIH. The indicators Hospitalization by Diarrhea Ratio (RID) and Composite Life Quality Indicator (ICV) were established. Results: The diarrheas still represent a large group of the hospitalizations of children (15,5% between 2006 and 2009). The RID was high in this period (69,7 hospitalizations/ 1.000 NV). The spacial analyses identified that the neighborhoods with the highest values of RID were, in most of the cases, those with the highest population concentration and better conditions of life.
