Abstract:

The study aimed to investigate the prevalence of psychotropic use and its association with the feeling of burden among relatives of Psychosocial Care Centers’ users. This is a cross-sectional study performed with 537 family caregiversthe 21st Health Region of the State of Rio Grande do Sul. The prevalence of psychotropic use was calculated with a confidence interval (95% CI) and the heterogeneity tests were performed between the strata of each independent variable. The association between the psychotropic use and the burden was tested using Poisson regression with the calculation of the adjusted prevalence ratios. The prevalence of psychotropic use in the studied population was 30% (95% CI: 26 -34), with higher consumption among women (40%), individuals aged 41 -50 years (42.06%), 5 to 8 years of study (37.57%), income between 0.5 and 1 minimum wage per capita (34.43%), who did not share the care actions (35.53%) and who attended patients with major degree of independence (36.67%). The burden feeling presented a dose -response relationship with the outcome. The higher the degree of burden, the greater the prevalence of psychotropic use, reaching 60.1% in the higher stratum and remaining strongly associated with the outcome even in the adjusted analysis (P -value = 0.001).
