Abstract:

This study aims to verify the validity and concordance self-reported of diabetes (DM) in the elderly in Campina Grande, State of Paraíba. This is a cross-sectional home-based study, conducted with 362 elderly aged 60 years or more of age registered in the Family Health Strategy (FHS) Program in Campina Grande, State of Paraíba. To verify the validity and reliability of the self-reported of DM was carried out sensitivity calculation, specificity and positive predictive value (PPV) and negative (NVP) in relation to demographic and socioeconomic variables. Kappa test was used to verify the agreement between the diagnosis and the self-reported of the disease. Among the study participants, 67.4% were women. Was observed prevalence of diagnosed DM of 14.1% and self-reported of DM to 18.1%. Moderate sensitivity was observed (58.8%), excellent specificity (87.8%), moderate PPV (44.8%) and excellent NVP (92.7%), and moderate agreement of self-reported DM (Kappa = 0.413 p<0.001). It was observed in this study due to moderate validity and agreement of self-reported of DM among the elderly, it is not advisable that the DM that is used as disease prevalence indicator in the study population.
