Abstract:

Introduction: the elderly have been affected by dysfunctions of the vestibular system that impact on quality of life. Therefore, it´s known that vestibular rehabilitation can contribute to improving balance, being important for the treatment of these disorders. Objective: to analyze the effect of a structured protocol of vestibular rehabilitation in the dizziness symptomatology and quality of life of elderly. Patients and Methods: attended nine elders, four male subjects (68.5 ± 11.09 years) and five females (72.4 ± 7.09 years). It was used to assess quality of life the Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI) and the symptoms of dizziness, scale quantification of dizziness. Developed a protocol for vestibular rehabilitation consisting of group activities. For data analysis, we used the Wilcoxon test and Student t test. We used the Spearman correlation coefficient to analyze the relationship between quality of life and symptoms of dizziness. The significance level was 5% (p ≤ .05). Results: There was significant improvement in symptoms of dizziness (p = 0.039), the overall quality of life (p = 0.0009) and physical (p = 0.0001), emotional (p = 0.0028) and functional (p = 0.0313) after completion of the program. There was also a good correlation between positive symptoms of dizziness and quality of life (p = 0.0022). Conclusion: concluded that program participants had a significant improvement of dizziness, general quality of life and their respective aspects after vestibular rehabilitation. There was also a good correlation between symptoms of dizziness and overall quality of life, that is, the lower the symptoms of dizziness, the better quality of life.
