Abstract:

Violence against women is a worldwide problem. There is, therefore, an increasing trend in the number of studies published in this area. The aim of this study was to review the scientific literature on the subject from 2009 through 2013. This is a systematic review of articles indexed in the Virtual Health Library. The sample was constituted of Brazilian Portuguese-language articles available free of cost, online and in full-text. We excluded non-scientific articles, studies published abroad and government information studies. Studies were assessed for methodological and violence-related aspects. The data were statistically analyzed using SPSS and Excel. Most of the 148 research papers were qualitative studies, published in 2011, by up to three authors, which had the victims as the study subjects, and used the method of Content Analysis to assess the data. The types of violence identified were physical, sexual and psychological, occurring in an overlapping manner. They were associated with physical and mental consequences. Our findings are in line with the current trend to conduct qualitative research on violence, in order to gain an in-depth understanding of the victims‘ experiences. We hoped that this study will contribute to raise awareness on the need to address this issue, in order to promote women‘s health.
