Abstract:

Violence is a serious public health issue and accounts for a socio-historical phenomenon with various causes and consequences, as well as multiple expressions. The main victims continue to be vulnerable and marginalized populations, in which dimensions such as gender, class, race, and social belonging intersect. Although ethnic and racial issues are present in studies that explain the phenomenon of violence, they tend to not consider it as also stemminginstitutional racism. This article aims to analyze dataqualitative-quantitative research that evaluated experiences of symbolic and structural violence experienced by young Black individuals, aged 15 to 29, residing in peripheral neighborhoods of two Brazilian capitals - Recife and Fortaleza. This analysis is based on focus groups and semi-structured interviews. The focus was on understanding the intersectionality, especially concerning race/skin color, territorial belonging, and class, in the very definition of identity. In both capitals, the Black youth brought to light a common reality: a limited horizon in defining life projects, constrained by economic issues as well as the concrete or symbolic marking of social spaces to which their access is denied.
