Abstract:

Objective: To analyze the violence experienced by older adults in the prison system through the lens of the Social Ecological Theory. Method: This is a cross-sectional study conducted with 262 older adults deprived of liberty across all prison units in the macro-regions of the state of Ceará, Brazil. Data collection took place from May to September 2022 using instruments to assess sociodemographic and prison-related profiles, implemented through the electronic questionnaire platform LimeSurvey. The categorized variables were structured according to the dimensions of the Social Ecological Theory and were associated with the outcome of experiencing violence within the prison system. Results: The analysis revealed a statistically significant association between the outcome of experiencing violence and the following categorized variables: protection within the prison system, contracting illnesses in prison, access to prison health services, and treatment received from law enforcement officers. In other words, older adults deprived of liberty are more vulnerable to violence in prison settings under the outcomes identified and within the framework of socioecological dimensions.
Conclusion: It is concluded that the prison environment increases the likelihood of older adults experiencing violence, reinforcing the premise of Social Ecological Theory that the environment significantly influences health and disease processes.
