Abstract:

Physical inactivity is a major public health challenges due to its association with chronic diseases and the economic impact on the public health system. However, the walking practice can help alleviate these problems. Objective: To determine if there are associations between walking practice during leisure-time, presence of risk factors and expenditures related to the use of health services among users of the public healthcare system in Brazil. Methods: The sample consisted of 963 adults. The walking practice was extracted from the Baecke questionnaire. Expenditures with treatment / year were assessed by the demand for services recorded in the clinical records. Results: Walking practice as leisure-time physical activity was reported by 64.4% of participants. The groups with higher frequency of practice showed lower values for age, BMI, WC and medication expenses. Individuals included in the category of higher involvement had 41% less chance of being REPLACEed into the group of highest total spend (OR = 0:59; 95% CI 0.39-0.89). Conclusion: It was found that the practice of walking as leisure-time physical activity was the most common for most users of the public healthcare system, which was associated with lower drug and overall expenditures.
