Abstract:

Water fluoridation is a caries control strategy recommended by the World Health Organization. In Brazil it is regulated by law but has not been successfully implemented in the North. The objectives of this research were to collect data on the existence of the heterocontrol in the 10 largest municipalities of Tocantins and to analyze the fluoride concentration present in the water supply of these cities. The research was carried outMay to August 2017 and had a quantitative, descriptive and cross-sectional analysis as the theoretical-methodological framework. Water collections were carried out monthly, using a network sampling protocol. The fluoride concentration in the waters was made with specific ion electrode by the direct technique. It was verified that water fluoridation monitoring has been in operation in the state capital since 2016. Regarding the fluoride concentration in the water, it was found that 31.6% of the samples analyzed were adequate for the maximum benefit of reducing caries and 0.6% of them presented a very high risk of dental fluorosis. It is concluded that it is necessary to implement a program to control the concentration of fluoride in water in Tocantins, in order to ensure that the population is not deprived of the anticary benefits of aggregation of fluoride to the treated water
