Abstract:

The institutional racism prevalent in the health services in Brazil is based on concrete power relations which subdue, dominate, and exclude the Black populationaccessing health services and institutions. This critical essay analyzes the importance of amplifying the debate and knowledge production about the health of the Black population (SPN) focusing on two points: the role of the National Policy for the Integral Health of the Black Population (PNSIPN) and the importance of ion of the color question in the health information systems; and the need for permanent training of professionals, including contents related to the understanding of racism as a social determinant of health/disease, and its effects. To demonstrate how structural and institutional racism has affected the Black population, we bring also examplesthe quilombola populations during the Covid-19 pandemic in the country, starting in 2020. It is concluded that the promotion of care, reduction of health inequities, and the quality of health care need to undergo changes in several dimensions such as the strengthening of SUS, the fight against institutional and structural racism, the improvement of permanent education for health professionals, the open debate about racism in the health services, and the substantial expansion and visibility of the scientific production about SPN.
