Abstract:

This study aimed to undertake a comparative analysis of the journalist coverage of the National Health System (SUS) by Folha de São Paulo, and the National Health System (SNS) by El Pais. The present qualitative study was anchored in the news theory focusing on news-values of ion and construction and on content analysis. All the contents published during the year 2013 of both newspapers were analyzed. Folha brought 88 covers, with 100 calls in total, and in El Pais, there were 37 covers and 39 calls. Folha\'s coverage focused on the Mais Médicos program, while in El País most of the news focused on the privatization of Spanish public health system. The most important news value in both was related to government. As a second category, in Folha, the controversy prevailed, focusing on the clash that formed between the federal councils of medicine and the Ministry of Health. In the case of the Spanish daily, the second most present category was the impact. In relation to the news values of construction, we found that the newspapers used diverse resources. Folha adopted simplification in its approach, as El Pais invested in personalization and dramatization to sensitize readers with accounts of users and health professionals whose background was often the privatization process of health care services.
