Abstract:

Women with disabilities still have few actions aimed at their needs in primary health care services. Despite the attention given to the female population in primary health care facilities, they still don’t recognize specificities of women with disabilities, such as issues related to their sexual and reproductive rights and their double vulnerability: as woman and as disabled person. This study is part of a qualitative research aimed to identify individual, social and programmatic double vulnerability of fifteen women with different types and degrees of disabilities, users of three primary health care facilities in São Paulo city. The women’s narratives highlighted rejection or overprotection experiences in their family relationships, difficulties in acquiring assistive devices, low education and lack of professional qualification, lower social participation, obstacles in their sexual life and motherhood. They face physical, communicational barriers and unwelcome attitudes from primary health care services. All of vulnerability dimensions are present and to think over them enables to build comprehensive health care practices that incorporate human rights of groups who historically experience violations: women and disabled persons.
