Abstract:

Purpose to assess the knowledge that women have about breast cancer screening methods. A population-based study conducted with women 18 years or older in Rio Grande between April and November 2011. Interviewers applied pre-coded questionnaire in all women living in selected households. Constructed one model for each screening test (breast self-examination, mammography and clinical breast exam), analyzed using Poisson regression. Of the 1596 women interviewed, 1355 (84.6%) reported self-examination, 456 (28.6 %) mammography and only 191 (12%) the clinical breast exam for the prevention of breast cancer. White women, with high school education had higher probability to report mammography and clinical breast exam as screening tests. For both results we also observed a linear trend between income quartiles and knowledge about screening tests, with knowledge improving in those better off. The study points out the need to raise awareness of the methods of prevention in women, and avoid late diagnosis. Manifested that black women with low education and low income had less knowledge of the clinical examination and mammography as prevention methods.
