0067/2016 - A relação entre auto-percepção do estado de saúde e a condição física em septuagenários e octogenários The relation between self-perceived health status and the physical fitness, in septuagenarian and octogenarian
Introduction: The aging process is followed by a decrease of physiological capacities. Handgrip (HT) and 6 minutes walking (6MW) are common tests to assess the physical fitness in aged people. The SF-36v2 questionnaire, including physical functioning (PF), role physical (FF) and physical scales (CF), have been used to assess the self-perceived health status. Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the physical fitness and the subject’s perception of health, in septuagenarian (70’) and octogenarian’s (80’), and to examine its relationship. Results: Fifty-seven 70’ and twenty-six 80’ volunteers were recruited from Ponte de Lima area. The participants completed the SF-36v2 questionnaire, and were tested on HT and 6MW. T-Test and Pearson coefficient of correlation was used to statistic analyses, significance level p < 0.05. Significant differences were found between 70’ and 80’ in CF (p=0.025], HT (p < 0.05) and 6MW (p<0.001). Moderate correlations were found between FF and both HT and 6MW (p<0.001) in 70’ an 80’. However, HT was correlated with FF and CF (p<0.001) only in 70’. Conclusion: 70’ show better level of muscle strength than 80’. The muscle strength, in 70’, and cardiorespiratory capacity, in 70’ and 80’, contributes significantly to the self-perception on physical health.
