Abstract:
The study describes the profile of the senior urban population assisted by the Family Health Strategy in Teofilo Otoni, MG, and investigates the factors associated to the prevalence of diseases. Using simple randomized sampling, 385 seniors were interviewed based on the ”A” Form and Senior Form provided by the Brazilian Basic Attention Information System. A total of 83.1% of the seniors self-reported having at least one disease, 69.9% had hypertension and 17.7% were diabetic. The Poisson regression analysis detected that the main factors associated to hypertension and other diseases were non-white skin color, low education, use of medication, use of dental prosthesis and need for the public health system; diabetes in turn was associated to women and dependence to perform daily activities. In conclusion, seniors of the community studied who showed characteristics related to low socioeconomic and cultural status are more susceptible to develop diseases, particularly hypertension. Although diabetes prevalence was lower, it requires control. We suggest structuring investments in the health services addressed to the elderly population and capacitation of health professionals to enable them to effectively work for improving the life quality of Brazilian seniors.
