Abstract:
The objective of this study wast o identify the incidence and risk factors for reduced functional capacity of elderly residents in the community. A prospective cohort study was conducted in two phases, in 2011 and 2014. Initially, the study population consisted of 202 independent elderly for basic activities of daily living. It was utilized as measure of association the relative risk (RR) and their respective intervals (CI) of 95% confidence, that were estimated by log-binomial regression with robust variance. The incidence of reduced functional capacity was 15.3%. Risk factors for functional decline were marital status without union (RRaj = 2.75; 95% CI: 1.15 to 6.57) and symptoms of depression (RRaj = 2.41; 95% CI: 1.15 to 5.06), even after adjustment for sex, age, family in come per capita, diabetes, use of medications and physical activity level. The high incidence of reduced functional capacity and its association with aspects of the marital relation ship and mental health reveals the need to consider such factors in planning health actions aimed at maintaining and restoring the functional capacity of the elderly.
