Abstract:

This study aims to describe the availability of herbal medicines and medicinal plants in the primary care units in the state of São Paulo, Southeast Brazil,the results of the first cycle of the National Programme for Improving Access and Quality of Primary Care (PMAQ). The PMAQ uses a cross sectional design, multicenter, nationwide, and they are used in this study data obtained4,249 health units, distributed among 645 municipalities of the state of São Paulo. Among this total units, in 467 (11%) was the availability of herbal medicines and / or medicinal plants. Among the 645 municipalities, in 104 (16.1%) had at least one health unit which provided these drugs. It was observed that the availability of herbal medicine is greater in larger cities with better social and economic conditions. Furthermore, it was found that industrialized herbal medicine has been more used than the vegetal drug or manipulated herbal medicine.
