Abstract:

The study aimed to evaluated the implementation of a regional network of death surveillance reflecting on challenges and potentialities of acting as observatory of violence against women. The research involved nine municipalities members of a committee of a health region set at Zona da Mata, Minas Gerais state, Brazil. We followed the committee meetings and conducted semi-structured interviews with members of the committee and municipal health managers. Furthermore, we analyzed information concerning investigations conducted and, for one municipality, we analyzed the notifications of death and cases of violence against women. The results point to some difficulties: lack of recognition of the activity of death surveillance; work overload; failure in communication between institutions; precariousness of resources, infrastructure and professional training. However, the informants reported improvements on the interaction between municipalities; increased investigations and greater awareness of the importance of death surveillance. We identified cases of domestic, obstetric and institutional violencethe investigation of deaths. The experience as a regional committee reinforces the strategy of strengthening death surveillance and the network of attention to women in violence situation.
