Abstract:

This study aimed to evaluate differences in global index and in each component of Brazilian Healthy Eating Index-Revised (BHEI-R) between men and women. This is a cross-sectional population-based study which analyzed information of 949 adults. For each sex, the mean for BHEI-R and its components were estimated. Women showed higher scores in the components of: fruits, vegetables and milk; among men, the score was higher only in the component: meat and eggs. Regarding associated factors, important difference was observed between the sexes. In men, better scores were observed in those of 40 years or more and those who didn‘t do anything to lose weight. In women, the advancing age, practicing physical activities in leisure, don‘t smoking, live with less than three people in the household and the presence of chronicle diseases were associated to a better diet quality. The results point to the need to develop strategies to improve diet quality in adults, especially men.
