Abstract:

Treacher Collins syndrome (TCS) is an autosomal dominant disorder with variable expression and the ear can be normal or affected (with absence or malformation). Individuals with TCS suffer social stigmata that may affect interaction with their peers. Quality of life instruments obtained through self-perception questionnaire is an important validated tool that can be used to create strategies to assist individuals with TCS. The objective of this study is to assess quality of life of individuals with TCS and to compare those with normal ear to those with affected ear. Twelve volunteers with clinical and genetic diagnosis of TCS answered the WHO questionnaire of quality of life (WHOQOL-100) and were divided into groups with normal ear (n=6) versus affected ears (n=6) and their results were compared. Siviero scale was used to stratify the quality of life scores as satisfactory, intermediate and unsatisfactory. The overall quality of life scores showed 73.13 and 71.81 for normal ear group and affected ear group, respectively, and both being classified as intermediate quality of life. The results demonstrated no statistically significant differences between the groups. The ear deformity does not represent an additional burden to these individuals, who shows other craniofacial features and overall quality of life scores classified as intermediate.
