Abstract:

The aim of this study was to diagnose the priority environmental problems and health risks to the communities surrounding the Petrochemical Complex of Rio de Janeiro. Participatory approach, action research led to application of open interviews, focus groups, meetings and workshop with residents and health and education professionals Porto das Caixas and Sambaetiba, both located in Itaboraí / RJ in the period November 2013 to December 2014. A structural analysis of the issues prioritized by the communities (water supply, sewage treatment and risk of communicable diseases; risk of air pollution and respiratory diseases, lack of public safety and risk of violence) was built to lay out the cause-effect-intervention, based on the Protocol for Assessing Community Excellence in Environmental Health. The process revealed lack of representativeness of the social actors of the locations studied in decision-making spaces on environmental issues. Urge educational activities with professionals and residents designed to encourage the creation of collective movements that are indispensable to guarantee mitigation rights of air contamination situations and access to sanitation services and public safety, and thus lower-risk health conditions.
