Abstract:

The growing consumption of sugary drinks such as sodas or artificial juices is associated with obesity prevalence in Brazil and around the world. This study aims to verify the frequency of consumption of sugary drinks among Brazilian children 24-59 months and to investigate the association of sugary drinks with demographic, socioeconomic and nutritional variables. Using data from the National Survey on Demography and Health of Women and Children - 2006, eating patterns was obtained by the food frequency questionnaire in the seven days preceding the interview, and anthropometry used weight and height of children. Among preschoolers, 37.3% consumed soft drinks and artificial juices 4 or more days per week. Residents of regions with greater economic development (OR 2,13; IC95% 1,74-2,60), urban areas (OR 1,81; IC95% 1,47-2,21), families of higher socioeconomic status (RR 1,44; 95% CI 1,17 to 1,77), children of mothers who watched TV regularly (OR 1,90; IC95% 1,40-2,58) and overweight children (OR 1,41; IC95% 1,02-1,97) were associated with consuming sodas and artificial juices 4 or more days per week. New studies are needed to understand the real contribution of sugary drinks to the childhood obesity epidemic.
