Abstract:

Objective: Evaluate food insecurity and its associated factors in pregnant women attending the public health of a northeastern brazilian capital. Methods: Cross-sectional study with pregnant women those resided in Maceio, and were met by the public municipal health, which were collected socioeconomic, anthropometric and carried hemoglobin (g/ dL) measurements and blood glucose (mg/ dL) and blood pressure measurement data (mmHg). Food insecurity was assessed by the Brazilian Food Insecurity Scale and its association with risk factors was tested using Poisson regression analysis, with the results expressed by the prevalence ratio (PR) and Confidence Interval of 95% (95%CI). Results: That was analised 363 pregnancy women, with a prevalence of food insecurity of 42.7%, with 8.0% of them with serious security. There was an association of food insecurity with: maternal hyperglycemia (PR = 1.45 (1.00 to 2.12)) and high maternal blood pressure levels (PR = 1.64 (1.04 to 2.56)). Conclusion: It was high the prevalence of food insecurity in pregnant women attending the public health of a northeastern Brazilian capital, being associated with maternal hyperglycemia and high blood pressure. Thus, the results presented must be seen in that it is made more efforts to ensure the human right to adequate food for this population.
