Abstract:

This article presents some existing contrasts between the discourses of public policies concerning women’s health, especially in regard to indigenous women and the ethnological discourse which emphasizes the specificity of the gender relations within indigenous societies. We start from the assumption that the development of these public policies as well as the organization of health services offered, which in fact are necessary, have a transforming effect on the actual gender relations within Indigenous Societies of the Americas. On the one hand, the gender relations between indigenous people are associated with the family relationships and bodyliness domains. On the other hand, the process of building public policies, by means of biomedical intervention and the medicalization of women’s body, constitutes a powerful tool for corporal presentation and the construction of subjectivities. The female gender is under discussion and its content is being negociated.
