Abstract:

Remarkable changes have been observed on AIDS epidemiological profile in Brazil. Objectives: To identify the college students’ knowledge about HIV transmission modes and correlate it with their answers concerning the proximity to HIV-positive people. Methods: A questionnairethe Brazilian Ministry of Health was applied to 591 health graduate students and their answers to ten of its questions about the virus transmission modes were analysed. The purpose was to evaluate the number of correct answers and to investigate the association between the amount of correct answers and the answers provided by the students to the questions related to the proximity to HIV-positive people. Results: The students’ majority (96%) answered correctly 7 to 10 questions related to HIV transmission modes (Group A) and 4% gave the correct answer3 to 6 questions (Group B). Correlating these two subgroups and the answers about the HIV-positive proximity non acceptance it was obtained significant association among Group B and the opinion that the HIV-positive employee should be fired by its employer, and also that they would feel uncomfortable if an HIV-positive child would study at the same school as their own children. Conclusions: The negative opinions concerning the proximity to HIV-positive people were few, but they were correlated to the lower knowledge about HIV transmission modes.
