The objective of this study was to understand, together with older family caregivers, the meanings attributed to caring for an older adult in the family. The qualitative approach involved a semi-structured interview with three guiding questions for older family caregivers. The participants of the research sample were older family members who take care of their relatives over 60 years old, sick, and/or dependent, ed for convenience, according to the eligibility criteria. Of the 51 participants, 23 were chosen to compose the qualitative study sample. The two categories shown in the Categorical Thematic Content Analysis were also confirmed through Factor Analysis. The first dimension, “Aspects related to Care”, referred to the chronicity of the health of the older adult being cared for. The second dimension, “Aspects related to the Caregiver\'s Quality of Life”, was the category related to the condition of the older adult caregiver. These two unveiled categories covered the meanings attributed to caring for a sick family member, including also thinking about the importance of the role of the older caregiver as an essential agent in the relationship between him and the older cared and the care process.
Significados atribuídos ao cuidar de uma pessoa idosa na família
Abstract(resumo):
O objetivo deste estudo foi compreender, junto aos idosos familiares cuidadores, os significados atribuídos ao cuidar de uma pessoa idosa na família. A abordagem qualitativa envolveu entrevista semiestruturada com três questões norteadoras aos idosos familiares cuidadores. Os participantes foram pessoas idosas familiares que cuidam de seus parentes com mais de 60 anos, doentes e/ou dependentes, selecionados por conveniência, de acordo com os critérios de elegibilidade. Dos 51 participantes, 23 foram escolhidos para compor a amostra para o estudo qualitativo. As duas categorias aventadas na Análise de Conteúdo Temática Categorial foram confirmadas também através da Análise Fatorial. Na primeira dimensão, “Aspectos ligados aos Cuidados”, referiu-se à cronicidade do estado de saúde do idoso cuidado. Na segunda dimensão, “Aspectos ligados à Qualidade de Vida do Cuidador”, predominou a categoria referente à condição do idoso cuidador. Portanto, estas duas categorias identificadas esclareceram os significados atribuídos ao processo de cuidar de um idoso familiar doente, inclusive para se pensar também na importância do papel do idoso cuidador como um agente essencial na relação entre ele e o idoso cuidado, bem como no processo de cuidar.
