Abstract:

The study aimed to verify the trend of mortality due to medicine poisoning in relation to age, sex and intention (accidental, intentional / suicide and undetermined intention) in São Paulo State. Adjusted time series to medicine poisoning mortality was made using datathe DATASUS Mortality Information System between 1996 and 2012. Magnitude and trend for mortality in relation to intention, sex and age were verified. Time series showed an increasing trend of adjusted mortality since 2005, which was steeper2009. Value of CI95% for the calculated average annual variation rate (AAVR) confirms the growing trend. This trend was not verified for general mortality for São Paulo State (AAVR= -0.22%, CI95% = -1.12 - 0.69), for specific mortality due to external causes (AAVR= -3.14%; IC95% = -4.75 - -1.49) and for mortality due to accidental medicine poisoning (AAVR= + 9.76%; CI95% = -12.16 - 37.14). Growth in mortality for intentional medicine poisoning (suicides) was the higher during the period (AAVR= + 10.64%; CI 95% = 6.92 - 14.49). Mortality due medicine poisoning among the younger showed the greater magnitude. Observed trend for mortality due to medicine poisoning in São Paulo State, as the relevance of intentional mortality and relevance of mortality among the younger, highlights the need to implement control measures.
