Abstract:

This systematic review aims analyze methodologies of Brazilian studies that use indexes to evaluate diet quality. A systematic literature search on electronic databases (Lilacs, Medline, Scopus and ScieLO) was performed. There was no restriction regarding the publication year of the studies. Original national papers using the Healthy Eating Index (HEI), or its adapted versions, as an instrument to evaluate diet quality were ed. Articles were eligible by the following descriptors: diet quality, healthy eating index and diet quality index. The respective terms in Portuguese were also used. Forty five papers were ed. Sixty percent analyzed the diet quality by the Healthy Eating Index. Forty percent used the Diet Quality Index. Among the studies assessed, 68.9% classified the diet quality. Most studies used 10 items to evaluate diet quality assessment and showed no standardization regarding the methodologies. 33.3% of the studies associated the indexes with socioeconomic and demographic factors, besides food items and health conditions. Differences in nomination and methodology used to assess diet quality compromise comparisons among the studies.
