Abstract:

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between shift work and dietary behavior of workers in a poultry processing plant in southern Brazil.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 1,206 workers, aged between 18 and 50 years, of both sexes. Standardized questionnaires were administered to investigate demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, shift work and food habits. Shift work was categorized as day and night shift. Dietary behavior of workers was assessed as follows: number and type of meals 24 hours in a usual day, inadequacy of meals time and dietary risk score. The dietary risk score was constructed based on the risk classification of the weekly consumption of 13 food items.
RESULTS: After adjusting for confounding factors, the male sex, non-white skin, and younger age were directly associated with dietary risk behaviors. Night shift workers had a higher number of meals per day and showed a higher inadequacy at mealtimes than daytime workers.
CONCLUSION: Our findings highlight the influence of night-shift work on dietary behavior of workers.
