Abstract:

The objective of this study was to assess the nutritional status of children under the age of five years in Brazil in 2009, associated with social and demographic factors. The data were obtainedthe Household Budget Survey (POF) for 2008-2009, and the nutritional profile was evaluated according to the weight-for-age, stature-for-age and weight-for-stature indices (n=14,569). The association was estimated by applying Pearson’s association test, logistic regression and correspondence analysis. The correspondence analysis revealed a stronger association of underweight status with children in the North and Northeast regions, in families with lower income levels and black color/race. On the other hand, overweight and obesity were more strongly related with children in the South, Southeast and Midwest regions, in urban zones, of the white color/race, with three years of age, andfamilies with intermediate income ranges. Overweight and obesity showed a heterogeneous spatial distribution among the states. The results point to nutritional epidemiological polarization, posing a large challenge to public health. A need exists to reduce nutritional deficiencies and promote healthier eating habits starting in infancy, aiming to modify the nutritional, epidemiological and mortality profiles of the population.
