Abstract:

The study aimed to characterize the oral health condition and main self-reported reasons for tooth extraction in a population of adults. This cross-sectional study examined 248 adults, aged 20 to 64, representative of the population of Piracicaba-SP. The home oral examination used the DMFT and CPI indexes, and information on the use and need for dental prosthesis according to WHO criteria, as well as the presence of visible biofilm. A questionnaire was applied to collect demographic and socioeconomic data and the reasons for tooth extraction. Descriptive analysis was stratified into 20-44 and 45-64 year age groups. The average DMFT was 20.37 (SE=0.50), with M=3.34 (SE=0.33) in the young and M=13.41 (SE=1.45) in the older adults. Periodontal pockets greater than 4 mm (CPI ≥ 3) were found in 20.5% of the young and 53.0% of the older adults. While 38.8% wore upper denture, 46.7% need of lower denture. The pain was the most common self-reported reason for performing the tooth extraction (37.5%), this choice was mainly due to a lack of other treatment options (52%) and in the private service (47.2%). It was conclude that young adults (20-44 years) had fewer missing teeth and periodontal disease, and less use and need of prostheses. Pain and lack of choice of other treatments were main self-reported reasons for performing tooth extractions.
