Abstract:

Presbycusis is a prevalent disorder in the elderly, but underdiagnosed. Thus, it is important to improve simple screening tools. Objective: Subjective faces scale was proposed in this study as a way to assess auditory self-perception of the elderly and their correlation with audiological tests. Method: All elderly referred to an audiology service of a healthy care center for the elderly of a public university hospital from February to November 2013 were evaluated. The patients were examined by otoscopy, pure tone and speech audiometry and answered the subjective faces scale and whisper test. The study included 164 older adults with an average age of 77 years. Results: It found strong correlation between subjective scale of faces and the audiometric threshold (r = 0.66). There was correspondence between the faces and the degree of hearing loss, and the corresponding face 1 normal hearing, the face 2 to mild hearing loss and face 3 to moderate hearing loss grade I. In assessing the psychometric properties of the subjective scale of faces, it was found that the faces 2 and 3 show good levels of sensitivity and specificity, with an area under the ROC curve of 0.81. Conclusion: Subjective facial scale seems to be a good complementary tool of screening in gerontological services, easy to administer and low cost.
