Abstract:

In order to estimate the prevalence of risk factors and non-communicable chronic diseases in people deprived of their liberty, a descriptive, cross-sectional, and quantitative study was carried out, with the application of a questionnaire, clinical care, and laboratory tests. In 2019, 202 participantsa male penitentiary were randomly ed. Data analysis verified associations using Fisher\'s Exact Test and Chi-square Test. The predominant sociodemographic profile of the participants consisted of single, black, over 30 years old, with low education and high prison recidivism. Most were sedentary, smokers, with high consumption of alcohol and drugs before incarceration. Prevalences of 24.8% of arterial hypertension, 54.5% of dyslipidemia, 49.9% of excess weight, 16.8% of metabolic syndrome, and 2.5% of diabetes were found. The difficulty in accessing health services associated with long sentences and the unhealthy environment favors the development and worsening of chronic diseases and their risk factors, representing a challenge for the organization of prison health care. This scenario reiterates the need to apply resources and efforts to implement comprehensive, longitudinal, and equitable care for people deprived of their liberty.
