Abstract:

Objective
To estimate the prevalence of eating disorders among workers living in urban areas of Feira de Santana, Bahia.
Methods
An epidemiologic, descriptive and exploratory cross-sectional study was conducted, including 1,273 workers selected by random procedure. Social-demographic and work characteristics, life style, psychosocial aspects at work and eating behavior were investigated.
Results
The female were predominant (60,2%), the younger people (51,7% were up to 35 years old), the married ones (53,1%), the African descent (55,2%), with high school grade (51,5%) and with low incomes (81,2%). The prevalence of Binge Eating Disorder and Bulimia Nervosa were, respectively, 4,3% and 1,0%. The prevalences of these disorders were higher among the workers who had an increasing consume of alcohol, dissatisfaction with his/her personal appearance and weight, report of violence in childhood, financial problems or worries related to it, those also involved in house care services and commerce, among those who had an informal work and were in the high strain group.
Conclusions
Besides investigating the relation between the eating disorders and work, this study has provided data about these disorders in a population base study. It is expected that this study may encourage investments in health policies for these disorders.
