Abstract:

The objective of the study was to quantitatively analyze the results of rapid tests for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Syphilis and Chronic Hepatitis in the prison population in a prison complex in Salvador-BA. This is a cross-sectional study. The sample consisted of men incarceratedAugust 2018 to August 2020, who had rapid tests performed. For data analysis, descriptive statistics and prevalence ratios were used with the respective 95% confidence intervals. A total of 6,160 men were studied, with a majority (93.1%) of blacks and browns, residents of Salvador-BA (65.8%), with predominantly elementary schooling (65.3%). Of the persons deprived of their liberty, 581 (9.4%) had a positive result for one or more STIs, with Syphilis being the most prevalent (80%). The variables age greater than 25 years [PR=1.37 CI95%(1.17-1.61)] and level of education without the higher education [PR=2.16 CI95% (1.04-4.49)] were associated a higher rate of positivity in tests, while never sharing drugs proved to be protective factor for positivity in the tests [PR=1.28 95%CI (1.07-1.53)]. It was concluded that there was a low prevalence of STIs in the sample studied, with Syphilis being the most prevalent.
