Abstract:

Despite the improvement of the lives of Brazilians in recent decades, there is still a picture of inequities in oral health in Brazil. This ecological study evaluated the relationship of socioeconomic and public health policy with the state of oral health in the Brazilian capital. Factor analysis was performed with indicators of socioeconomic conditions, revealing two common factors: economic deprivation and socio-sanitary condition. Then, if performed stepwise multiple linear regression for the oral health indicators (average DMFT 12 years, average rate of missing teeth and caries free population) with the two factors in common and fluoridation of the water supply . A stepwise multiple linear regression for the DMFT of capital was estimated by socio-sanitary conditions and fluoridation, adjusted by economic deprivation; while the model for the mean tooth loss was estimated only by fluoridation and economic deprivation, and finally, the model for the rate of decay of the free population in the Brazilian capital was estimated by socio-economic status and health adjusted for water supply fluoridated. Therefore, the results indicate the need for social actions that impact on the living conditions of the population to reduce tooth decay.
