Abstract:

Objective: To investigate the association of socioeconomic position (SP) and comorbidity of self-reported disability. Methods: Date were obtaineda population survey in Belo Horizonte, between 2008 and 2009. The sample was probabilistic, stratified by conglomerates in three stages: census tracts, households and individuals. The outcome variable was disability, defined by the self-reported problem in the function or structure of the body. The explanatory variables were gender, age, self-reported morbidity and SP index that included the variables maternal education and interviewed and family income. The factorial analysis was used to evaluate SP index and logistic regression. Results: The prevalence of disability in the population was 10.43% (95% CI: 9.1 to 11.7%). In multivariate analysis self-reported disability was associated with age (OR = 1.02; 95% CI: 1.01, 1.03) and reporting of two or more diseases and SP index (OR = 0.96; 95% CI: 0.95 to 0.97). Conclusion: The low socioeconomic status and occurrence of diseases appears to contribute to the occurrence of disability. These results show the health inequities among people with disabilities, and the relevance of BPC to support vulnerable populations.
