Abstract:

Objective: The aim of this study was to estimate the effect of prognostic factors on breast cancer survival using variables as age, stage and extension of tumour, using proportional hazards and competing risks models proposed by Cox and Fine-Gray, respectively. Methods: It is a population-based retrospective cohort study of 524 women diagnosed with breast cancer in the Campinas/São Paulo/Brazil from 1993 to 1995 and followed until 2011. Results: The age was categorized using Cox models. According to Fine-Gray and Cox models, age was not significant when competing risks were presents or the only cause of death was breast cancer. Conclusions: Survival curves estimated by Kaplan-Meier were not so different between breast cancer and other causes of death as well as comparing by age group, using log rank test. Cox and Fine-Gray models identified the same prognostic factors that impact on the survival of breast cancer.
