Abstract:

Trend studies on the model of birth in Brazil have revealed a scenario of successive linear increases in the proportions of cesarean sections. However, the possibility of changes in the temporal evolution of the surgical route has not been considered. Thus, we aimed to verify possible inflection points in the proportion of cesarean sections in Brazil, macro-regions, and federated units, as well as to estimate their projections for the year 2030. We used the time series with the cesarean sections notified in the Department of Informatics of the SUS in the period from 1994 to 2019. Auto-Regressive Integrated Moving Average and joinpoint regression were used to obtain projections and trends of cesarean section proportions, respectively. Caesarean section proportions showed a significant upward trend over the 26 years of study at all levels of aggregation. On the other hand, when considering the formation of segments, a stabilization trend was observed both in the country and in the South and Midwest regions, starting in 2012. The North and Northeast showed a tendency to increase and the Southeast a significant drop. Projections indicate that in 2030, 57.4% of births in the country will occur by surgery and that in the Southeast and South, proportions above 70% will be observed.
