Abstract:

This paper analyzes the impact of the “Bolsa-Familia” Program (BFP) on the quality of diet of Pernambuco State households using the data from the 2008-2009 Household Budget Survey (HBS-IBGE). The Propensity Score Matching method, which corrects the sample selection bias, was used to perform the comparison between the beneficiary families and the families not in the “Bolsa-Familia” Program as a control group. The results show that the average value of the Diet Quality Index (DQI) for the beneficiary families in the Program exceeds by 9,05 the average value of the DQI for the non-participating in the BFP. The results support the effectiveness of the BFP in raising the quality of the diet of families, especially regarding the reduction of fat and sodium, and increased of variety of food.
