Sociological studies indicate a malaise due to the forms of use of time in contemporary societies. This study aimed to develop a device that combines a quantitative instrument on time use, with a qualitative technique of interview, seeking to reveal possible relationships between time and health. Field research was conducted with nursesa hospital in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro. The workers recorded the schedules of activities over the course of a week, through the use of a booklet of activities, adaptedtime-use diaries. The interviews were inspired on self-confrontation so as to lead workers to observe their own time through a colored image that identified the distribution of activities along the week. The device allowed to investigate how workers perceive their own time and how they relate it to health, considered in a broad sense. Among the issues brought by the group investigated as a source of discomfort and malaise, are the professional work overload, long time to others that articulates to a short time for him/herself and the simultaneity of activities especially related to housework, thus revealing a strong component of gender relations. The potency of that device as an investigative way of the relations between work and health indicates its suitability in studies with other groups of workers.

Abstract(resumo):
Estudos sociológicos apontam um mal-estar decorrente das formas de uso do tempo nas sociedades contemporâneas. O presente estudo visou desenvolver um dispositivo que conjuga um instrumento quantitativo sobre o uso do tempo, com uma técnica qualitativa de entrevista, buscando revelar possíveis relações entre o tempo e a saúde. Foi realizada pesquisa de campo com enfermeiros de um hospital na região metropolitana do Rio de Janeiro. Através do uso de uma caderneta de atividades adaptada de diários de uso do tempo, os sujeitos registraram os horários das atividades ao longo de uma semana. As entrevistas se inspiraram na autoconfrontação, no sentido de os trabalhadores observarem uma imagem colorida que descrevia o próprio tempo a partir do registro das atividades. O dispositivo permitiu investigar como os trabalhadores percebem esse tempo e como o relacionam à saúde, considerada em sentido amplo. Entre as questões trazidas pelo grupo como fonte de desconforto e mal estar físico e mental, encontram-se a sobrecarga de trabalho profissional e a constatação de um tempo em demasia para os outros que se articula ao pouco tempo para si com forte componente das relações de gênero. A potência desse dispositivo como caminho investigativo das relações entre o tempo e a saúde indica sua adequabilidade em estudos com outros grupos de trabalhadores.
