Abstract:

The aim of this study was to determine the rate of older individuals with an adequate water intake and its associated factors among community-dwelling older adults living in the urban area of Pelotas-RS. Cross-sectional population-based study carried out in 2014 with older (≥60 years) participants of the study \"COMO VAI?”. The number of glasses of water ingested/day of the interviews was investigated, considering the ingestion of at least eight glasses/day to be adequate. The independent variables were sociodemographic, behavioral, and health characteristics. Poisson Regression was used to investigate associations. A total of 1,451 elderly people were interviewed, with only 12.6% (95%CI 10.8; 14.7) presented adequate water consumption. A higher percentage of older subjects with an adequate water consumption was observed in those younger elderly, in those with overweight, who had five or more diseases, and those who were more dependent on functional capacity. A low percentage of older subjects with an adequate water intake was observed among the older adults in the study. The decreasing trend of water intake in relation to age highlights the importance to develop actions to this higher risk population about in order to stimulate an adequate water intake and the possible consequences of the lack of proper consumption.
